Influence of land use and land cover on the emission of fine particulate matter (PM2.5µm) by fires in the Amazon and Cerrado biomes integrating modeling and remote sensing
The project
Fires are a global phenomenon and one of the main sources of emission of trace gases and aerosols into the atmosphere. Thus, it is necessary to estimate the fires with better accuracy and evaluate the activities that aim to mitigate them. Among the main factors that influence the accuracy of these estimates is the land use cover since the emission factors are specific to the different classes of land use and land cover. Considering Brazil, most emissions associated with fires are concentrated in the Amazon and Cerrado biomes, however, there is no emission inventory based on orbital data considered as a reference in these biomes. The present project proposes to update land use and land cover in the PREP-CHEM-SRC emissions preprocessor and estimate PM2.5µm emissions associated with fires in the Amazon and Cerrado biomes using this tool, comparing such estimates with global inventories and verify their accuracy in these biomes. It is also proposed to analyze the intra-annual and inter-annual variation of these emissions in the Amazon biome and the quantification of the reduction in PM2.5µm emissions associated with fires that the integrated fire management implemented in protected areas of the Cerrado biome provides. With the development of the project, it is expected to determine the impact of land use and cover on PM2.5µm emissions associated with fires and which inventory best represents emissions in the Amazon and Cerrado biomes, as well as understand the variation of these emissions in the biome Amazon and demonstrate that integrated fire management is effective in reducing emissions in the Cerrado biome.
